This elementary and magnet school is an example of hybrid onsite and offsite construction at its best, blending the advantages of each to build an architecturally stunning school on a tight ‘V’ shaped lot within a short period of time.
Traditional onsite construction was used for the light-filled two-story atrium, cafeteria, gym and mechanical spaces. The 88 steel and concrete modular units for the school wings were crane-set on a spider web of structural steel supports in the underground parking garage. There was no room for error—but NRB had preassembled all buildings at the plant to ensure precision fit within strict tolerances.
Design innovations include a living roof over the underground garage, which is used as a teaching tool for children, and cantilevering two modules to form a balcony over the front entrance.
